How this site and its guides are made.
Pictures
The field-guide plates are made in the style of pen-and-ink drawings with a watercolor wash, from written specifications of what each part should look like. Each plate is checked against its specification. More on how we check them.
The text is written from the sources we cite and checked against those sources. A person reads each guide before it goes on sale. The words and the selection and arrangement of the guides and this site are © 2026 Supertrained Inc.
Type
Headings are set in Sorts Mill Goudy, by Barry Schwartz, after Frederic Goudy’s Goudy Old Style. The text is set in Literata, by TypeTogether. Both are used under the SIL Open Font License.

Every date, plant and plate note names its source. The full list is on the sources page. Hometown Field Guides is not affiliated with any of the organizations it cites.
Built with
The site is built with Astro and hosted on Vercel. Payments are handled by Stripe. Email from the site is sent by Resend, and mail to hello@hometownfieldguides.com is handled by AgentMail, where an automated assistant (an AI) helps answer it, with a person overseeing it.
