Pictures

There are no photographs on this site. The photo-style pictures, the kind that look like a phone snapshot of a yard, are generated images, and each one says so in its caption.

The field-guide plates are made in the style of pen-and-ink drawings with a watercolor wash, with AI assistance (ChatGPT), from written specifications of what each part should look like. Each drawing is checked against its specification, and every plate that identifies a living thing is reviewed by a lepidopterist or a horticulturist before the guide ships. Until then it carries the note “Draft, awaiting expert review”. More on how we check them.

Type

Headings are set in Sorts Mill Goudy, by Barry Schwartz, after Frederic Goudy’s Goudy Old Style. The text is set in Literata, by TypeTogether. Both are used under the SIL Open Font License.
