These terms cover buying a guide from hometownfieldguides.com, the license that comes with each guide, and using this website. Before you pay, checkout asks you to tick a box to confirm that you are 18 or older and that you agree to these terms and our Refund Policy. The box starts unticked, and we keep a record of which version of these terms you agreed to. Our Privacy Policy explains what information we collect and how we use it.
Age
You must be 18 or older to buy a guide. This site and its products are for adults.
Who you’re contracting with
Supertrained Inc., a Florida corporation, runs this site and sells the guides. Hometown Field Guides and Garden with Lilly are names that Supertrained Inc. uses. Garden with Lilly is a brand of Supertrained Inc., not an individual expert. When you buy a guide, your contract is with Supertrained Inc.

What you’re buying
Each guide is a downloadable PDF about helping monarch butterflies breed and grow in a specific city, with a printable observation journal. The Austin, Texas edition costs US$17. If sales tax applies where you live, checkout adds it and shows you the total before you pay. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Other city editions may be added later, each priced separately.
A guide is a digital product. Nothing is shipped.
Monarchs are wild. A guide shows you how to improve your odds of having them breed in your yard. It can’t promise they will come, lay eggs or survive. Don’t rely on a picture alone to identify a plant or animal. “Educational content, not professional advice” below says more.
Your license to use the guide
When you buy a guide, we give you a personal, non-exclusive license to:
- download the PDF, and keep copies of it on your own devices and in a backup;
- print the guide and the journal pages for the people in your household, and for a child or grandchild you are doing the project with; and
- if you teach, print copies for the students in one class you teach.
You may not:
- resell the guide;
- post the PDF where the public, or a whole school, can get it;
- give the file to anyone outside your household, or upload it to a class website, a shared drive or a learning platform (the classroom permission covers printed copies for one class, not the file);
- remove our name or copyright notice from it; or
- copy it to make a competing product.
To use a guide with more than one class or a larger group, email hello@hometownfieldguides.com first.
Gifts. If you buy a guide as a gift, you may give the file to one adult, for their household. Pass these terms along with it, and stop using your own copies. The license then belongs to that person instead of to you.
These limits don’t stop you from making uses the law allows, such as fair use, or from using facts that you learn from a guide. They don’t stop you from converting a guide into a form you need to read it, such as with a screen reader.
A refund doesn’t end your license. You may keep the copy you saved, on these same terms.
Buying a guide
Stripe runs checkout and processes your payment. Stripe’s own terms and privacy policy apply to its payment service. We don’t receive or store your card number. Checkout asks for your billing address; Stripe uses it to work out whether sales tax applies, and we use it as our Privacy Policy describes.
Supertrained Inc. is the seller. Your card statement will usually show SUPERTRAINED* HOMETOWN rather than Hometown Field Guides. If you don’t recognize a charge, email us before you dispute it with your bank, and we’ll sort it out quickly.
Delivery
After you pay, you will usually see a download link on the thank-you page, and we also email it to you. The link on the thank-you page works for 30 days from your purchase. The emailed link works for 30 days from when we first try to send it, normally within minutes of your payment. If a link expires, you can get a new one on our “Lost download link” page with the email address you paid with, or email hello@hometownfieldguides.com and we will send it again at no charge. A link we re-send gets its own 30 days from when we send it. We don’t send new links for an order that has been refunded.
Refunds
You can get a full refund within 30 days of purchase, for any reason, by email. See our Refund Policy for how to ask and what happens after.
After you buy
We may ask you one optional question on the thank-you page. Answering is up to you and doesn’t change your order.
Emailing us
Email to hello@hometownfieldguides.com is answered with the help of an automated assistant (an AI), which may draft or send replies. A person at Supertrained Inc. oversees the assistant and gets copies of the emails. If you would like a person to handle your request, say so in your email. A person at our company confirms any exception to these terms or to the Refund Policy; a reply from the assistant on its own doesn’t change them.
This inbox is not for emergencies. For a suspected poisoning or sting, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. In an emergency, call 911.
Educational content, not professional advice
The guides and this site give general educational information about gardening and watching monarchs.
The safety information in the guides, including the material about stinging caterpillars and milkweed sap, is general information. It is not medical advice. It doesn’t diagnose or treat an injury, and it doesn’t replace advice from a doctor, a veterinarian or a poison specialist. A grown-up should supervise children, and should be sure what a plant or animal is before anyone handles it. For a suspected poisoning or sting, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222. In an emergency, call 911. Don’t wait to get help because of anything in a guide.
Milkweed is poisonous if eaten, by people, pets or livestock, and its sap can hurt your eyes and irritate skin. Keep it away from children’s and pets’ mouths, and wash your hands after touching it. Some caterpillars sting. If you’re not sure what something is, don’t touch it, and confirm what it is with a qualified local expert before anyone handles it. You decide what to plant, what to handle and how to do it safely, and you are responsible for the people and animals in your care while you do.
Rules about collecting, raising and releasing monarchs can change. Check the current federal and Texas rules before you collect eggs or caterpillars, and follow them.
We can’t promise that monarchs will visit your yard or lay eggs there, that caterpillars will survive, or that any plant will grow the way a guide describes. Weather, predators, disease and local conditions all affect real gardens, and we don’t control them.
Don’t rely on a picture alone to identify a plant or animal, or to decide whether it is safe to touch. A picture can contain an identification error even when it looks realistic.
Hometown Field Guides is not affiliated with, and is not sponsored, endorsed or reviewed by, Monarch Watch, the University of Kansas, Journey North, Monarch Joint Venture, the Xerces Society, Texas Parks and Wildlife, the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Native Plant Society of Texas, or Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. We cite public information from these and other organizations as sources. Citing them doesn’t mean they approve of our guides. Following a guide doesn’t enroll or certify your garden in any program, such as Monarch Watch’s Monarch Waystation program.
Using this site
Please don’t:
- enter someone else’s email address in our forms without their permission;
- misuse checkout, our forms or download links, or post your download link publicly;
- try to interfere with or break the site; or
- send us passwords or account details for other services.
We can block anyone who misuses the site, our forms or our download links.
Ownership
Supertrained Inc. or its licensors own the copyright and other rights in the original material in the guides and on this website, including the writing and the way the material is selected and arranged. Material from other people stays subject to their rights. We don’t claim copyright in facts, in public-domain material, or in any other material that copyright law doesn’t protect. What you may do with a guide you bought is described in “Your license to use the guide” above.
No warranty
We work to make the guides accurate, and we say where each fact comes from. But this site and the guides are provided “as is.” We don’t promise that they are free of errors, that a plant will grow, or that a monarch will come. To the extent the law allows, we disclaim implied warranties, including the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Nothing here limits our refund promise. Some states don’t allow these limits, and there they apply only as far as the law allows.
Limits on our liability
To the extent the law allows, Supertrained Inc. is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses from your use of this site or a guide, such as a lost plant or a disappointing garden season. If we are liable for a money loss anyway, our total liability for a claim about a guide is limited to what you paid us for that guide or US$50, whichever is greater.
These limits don’t apply to death or personal injury caused by our negligence, to fraud, gross negligence or intentional misconduct, or to any liability that the law where you live doesn’t let us limit. They don’t restrict statutory damages, court orders, or attorney’s fees and costs that the law doesn’t allow us to limit. Nothing here limits your refund under our Refund Policy, or any consumer right that can’t be waived.
Governing law and where disputes are heard
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Florida. You keep the protection of any consumer law where you live that can’t be waived. You may bring a claim in the courts of the state where you live, or in the state or federal courts in Pinellas County, Florida. If we bring a claim about your purchase, we’ll bring it only in a state or federal court where you live; this doesn’t limit claims about copying or reselling a guide, which may need to go to a federal court. These terms don’t require arbitration, and they don’t waive your right to take part in a class action.
If you have a problem
We encourage you to email hello@hometownfieldguides.com first, so we can try to fix it. We will try to resolve it within 30 days. Emailing us isn’t required before you use your legal rights, and it doesn’t extend any legal deadline.
California residents: under California Civil Code section 1789.3, you may contact the Complaint Assistance Unit of the Division of Consumer Services of the California Department of Consumer Affairs in writing at 1625 North Market Blvd., Suite N 112, Sacramento, CA 95834, or by telephone at (800) 952-5210.
If part of these terms doesn’t hold up
If a court finds part of these terms unenforceable, the rest still applies.
Changes to these terms
We may update these terms for the use of this site and for future purchases. When we do, we will change the date at the top of this page. Your purchase stays governed by the version you agreed to at checkout, which we keep a record of. If we ever need you to agree to new terms for a guide you already bought, we will show you the new terms and ask; a change to this page on its own doesn’t do that.
