We want this website to work for everyone, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard, magnification, or voice control.
Our standard
We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA. This is a goal we’re building toward, not a certification we’re claiming.
What we do
- Use semantic headings and landmarks, so screen readers can navigate the page.
- Make every control usable by keyboard, with a visible focus outline.
- Write text descriptions for images, plates, and diagrams.
- Reduce motion when your device asks for it.
- Check color contrast against WCAG 2.2 AA.
- Run an automated accessibility check on pages before each release.
The guide itself
Each guide is delivered as a PDF. We’re working to make the PDF as accessible as we can, including readable text (not scanned images of text) and a sensible reading order. We have not yet confirmed the PDF is fully tagged for screen readers; see our open questions in ASSUMPTIONS.md in this project.
Known limits
Some pages include illustrated plates (for example, identification artwork) with fine detail. Each has a text description, and we’re working toward a larger, zoomable view for these images.
